What to do in and around Kilmore

Walk around Kilmore's historical buildings

Please refer to the small booklets 'A Walk In Kilmore' or 'Roaming Round Historic Kilmore' for full information.
In brief however, buildings of particular note in Kilmore include;  Whitburgh Cottage (1852), Catholic Church (1857), The Old Goal (1859) , The Old Town Hall (1894), Red Lion Hotel (1856), Royal Oak Hotel (1860, site has had a hotel since 1840), Old Kilmore Post Office (1861), Kilmore Courthouse (1863), Police Barracks (1893), Colonial Bank (1860), Kilmore Hospital (1859) and many many more!

Visit a local winery

Kilmore and surrounds is a great area to grow quality wines and therefore has many wonderful wineries only a short drive away.
A few of these include;
  • McIvor Estate 03 5433 5266
  • Rocky Passes Winery 03 5796 9366
  • Rowanston on the Track Winery 03 5425 5492
  • Merindoc Cafe and Cellar Door 03 5433 5188
  • Tahbilk Winery 03 5794 2555
  • Mitchelton Winery 03 5736 2221
  • Brave Goose Vineyard 03 5799 1229
  • Shelmerdine Vineyeards Cafe & Cellar Door 03 5433 5188
The area of Heathcote, 30 minutes north of Kilmore, is well known as a area producing premier wines (particularly shiraz) and has over 30 Cellar Doors and even hosts an annual festival for locals to showcase their produce.

Visit a local brewery

20 minutes drive north of Kilmore is the delightful Tooborac Brewery & Pub. This establishment has a lovely character, having both the cosy fire indoors for wintery days, and the open paddock style beer garden for a summery afternoon. Well worth a visit! The beer is also quite delicious!

Railtrail

Ride a bike, walk or run Australia's longest continuous rail trail! The trail is 134km in total, from Tallarook through Yea to Mansfield. It has stunning views of the majestic countryside including lakes, rivers, farmland, mountains and historical monuments.

Visit the local Art Gallery

Kilmore Art Society is a very active and thriving group. I highly recommend a visit to their Art Gallery,  located in the old Courthouse at No. 4 Powlett St, next to Cattleyas restaurant.
The Artmakers Mill is another place to view artworks, and also functions as a cafe. The building's exterior is Art Deco in style and has been recently refurbished. The interior has a mezzanine level and functions beautiful as a gallery.

Monument Hill

Walk, run, ride or drive up the delightful Monument Hill Reserve (approx 4 km round trip) . It is an area of natural bushland home to a large variety of trees, shrubs and native flowers, as well kangaroos, birds, echidnas and wombats. Walking here at dusk you almost guaranteed to see many kangaroos!
At the top of the hill is the 'Hume & Hovell Monument', constructed in December 1924 to celebrate the centenary of the explorers' journey through this area as they travelled from the settled districts of New South Wales to Port Phillip. The monument was placed on the 'Victorian Heritage Register' (VHR) in 2015.
The monument can be climbed by a series of steps, atop which you can get a fabulous view of Kilmore township and the surrounding countryside.

Kilmore Horse Racing Club

Kilmore Racing Club is a thriving country race course that has both turf and harness racing. Race meets (including night racing) are regularly held throughout the year with the prestigious Kilmore Pacing Cup held in March and the Kilmore Turf Cup held as part of the Spring Carnival.
